Good Shepherd Medical Center hosted Great Expectation, Ready, Set, Baby at the Healthy Institutes.

The room was full of new moms, local vendors, scrumptious delights of finger foods, and several door prizes. The idea behind GSMC’s Ready, Set Baby is to acquaint new moms about women and children’s offerings at the hospital as well as other community services.

Christie Hawkins, chief nursing officer, RNC, MSN and divisional director of Maternal Child Unit explained it this way: “I think it is important for families to have information before the babies are born. They need to know what to expect and the resources that is available in the community.”

Marissa Rubio is expecting her first baby on September 2nd. Ms. Rubion wanted a girl however, she is blessed with a boy they have named Fabian. “I wanted a girl,” she said. But we are happy with Fabian.”He is already spoilt from the womb.” She came to the event to find out the services offered at GSMC.

Patricia Harkins, a patient care tech for 10 years with GSMC, has worked in labor and delivery. She explained the Antepartum and Perinatology Clinic.

“Before, a mom will have to go Dallas or Shreveport if she was having problems with the pregnancy,” she stated. “Not any more. GSMC is the only hospital with antepartum and perinatology expertise in the region.” Some of their patients come from as far as Texarkana.

Gabby Jones, RN, BSN is over Perinatology. “I am excited about the services we offer,” she said. “Any high risk pregnancy can be taken care of at our Antepartum and Perinatology Outpatient Clinic.”
